Get involved in choosing the next leader of the Liberal Party.
With The Honourable Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announcing his resignation as leader of the Liberal Party, the Liberal Party will organize a leadership election to determine his successor. It's important to note that Justin Trudeau will remain as Prime Minister until a new leader is chosen.
Key Dates
- January 23, 2025: Deadline to declare candidacy.
- January 27, 2025: Last day to register to vote.
- March 9, 2025: Leadership vote concludes.
How It Works
Potential Candidates
Candidates interested in running must:
- Declare their interest by January 23, 2025.
- Pay a $350,000 entrance fee.

Two key committees are behind the scenes:
- Suzanne Cowan & Marc-Etienne Vien co-chair the Leadership Vote Committee to organize the voting process.
- MP Patricia Lattanzio & John Herhalt lead the Leadership Expense Committee, setting spending rules and limits.
How to Vote
In order to participate in the vote, you must register as a Liberal by January 27.
For those interested in becoming a Registered Liberal, a person must:
- Be at least fourteen (14) years of age.
- Support the purposes of the party.
- Be a Canadian citizen, have status under the Indian Act, or be a permanent resident of Canada.
- Not be a member of any other federal political party in Canada.

Frank Baylis
